Partner choice and the evolution of human cooperation: Evidence from hunter-gatherers

Humans cooperate to an unparalleled scope and degree in the animal kingdom. How did this propensity to cooperate with strangers evolve? One hypothesis is that our ability to choose who we interact with created a competitive market to be chosen as a social partner, selecting for traits that made us desirable as partners, such as being cooperative. I will present data from Hadza hunter-gatherers that cast doubt on the partner choice hypothesis.
