Emily Perkins – “A biopsychosocial perspective on the development of conduct problems”

Conduct problems, such as aggressive behavior and serious rule violations, cause substantial personal and societal burden. Understanding the development of conduct problems in biopsychosocial terms will facilitate the creation of therapeutic interventions and policy initiatives aimed at preventing maladaptive trajectories, ultimately reducing these burdens. This talk will integrate developmental, clinical, neuroscientific, and public health approaches to characterize pathways of risk and resilience over the lifespan. I will discuss how basic science and clinical experience can be mutually informative, including potential applications of EEG in the clinic and the courtroom. I will also describe limitations to the generalizability of what is known about risk for conduct problems and ongoing work to overcome barriers to collecting representative samples.

Diego Reinero – “Malleable Moral Minds”

In today’s politically polarized world, it’s hard to imagine that anyone might change their mind about a moral or political issue. People seem entrenched in an eternal battle of “us” vs. “them”. Yet societies and their collective moral views do change (e.g., gay rights). What explains this paradox — that people’s moral minds seem individually fixed yet collectively flexible? In this talk, I will present several studies highlighting how people’s moral and political views change through conversation with others and risk factors for building consensus. Throughout I will highlight the role of social influence and social identity in shaping our ability to reach a shared reality with others.
